William
Shakespeare was the author of at least 38 plays and 154 sonnets. The dramatist,
actor, poet and theater manager created the most influential and lasting body
of work in the English language. An extraordinary exploration of human nature,
Shakespeare contributed thousands of words to the English language and expanded
the dramatic possibilities of blank verse, making it mimic the rhythm of speech
even as he elevated speech to poetry. He was born 450 years ago on April 23, 1564;
check out our display of some of his work, in print and video. He died on his
birthday, April 23, 1616.
