Ted Williams: 75 years ago
Sunday was
the seventy-fifth anniversary of Ted Williams making his major league debut for
the Boston Red Sox. On April 20, 1939, he got one double in four at-bats, as
the Sox lost to the New York Yankees, 2-0. Theodore Samuel Williams ended up
playing in Boston for 19 seasons, but during the prime of his career, he served
as a navy pilot in World War Two and the Korean War. Leigh Montville’s “Ted
Williams: Biography of an American Hero” brings to life this American legend.
Also we have Robert Weintraub’s “The Victory Season”, which looks at the end of
war and players like Ted Williams coming back to the game. Just added is Boston Globe writer Ben
Bradlee’s “The Kid: the Immortal Life of Ted Williams”.
