Fifty
years ago on March 21, Alcatraz Prison closed after twenty-nine years of
operation. It’s the site of the first lighthouse and United States Fort built
on the west coast. Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay about
1.5 miles offshore from San Francisco, California. We have a few books about the history of the
famous rock including “Alcatraz: The Last Day” by photographer Leigh Wiener and
“Alcatraz: The Official Guide” by Paul
