Area Codes Introduced: 60th Anniversary

Nov 10, 1951

The North American Numbering Plan, which provided area codes for Canada, the US and many Caribbean nations, was devised in 1947 by AT&T and Bell Labs. However, all long-distance calls were operator-assisted. On this date, the mayor of Englewood, NJ, direct-dialed the major of Alameda, CA, using his area code. By 1960 all telephone customers could dial long-distance calls.

Need to learn about the father of the telephone, we have books about Alexander Graham Bell. He was born in 1847 in Scotland. Did he get the credit for the telephone after peeking at someone elses work? Try the book "The Telephone Gambit" by Seth Shulman.
