Oct 4, 1931- Chester Gould's new comic strip, "Plainclothes Tracy" first appeared on this date in the Detroit Daily Mirror and later was syndicated in nearly 1,000 newspapers under the revised title "Dick Tracy". Tracy, a clean-cut, square jawed detective, uses fancy gadgets to battle such foes as Pruneface, Flat Top, Mumbles and others. Creator Gould died May 11, 1985, but the strip continues today.
