Forty
years ago on April 30, 1974, famed actress Agnes Moorehead died in Rochester,
Minnesota, at the age of 67. Moorehead was a veteran actress of the stage,
screen and television for five decades. This month our lobby display case features
some unique items from our library’s archives collection, including newspaper
articles, letters, and Christmas cards from Agnes. There are photos of her and
her mother Molly, who lived here in Reedsburg. Agnes was a guest speaker for
the dedication of the new municipal building in 1971. We have on display the scissors
she used when cutting the ribbon that day.
Also included in the display are many of the films she appeared in such
as Citizen Kane, Jane Eyre and Johnny Belinda, in which she was nominated for
an Academy Award. Moorehead is best remembered for her characterization of a
sharp-tongued, sarcastic witch in the television series “Bewitched”.
