Twenty-five
years ago this April, one of the greatest sports films was released. “Major
League” was filmed right here in Wisconsin at former Milwaukee County Stadium.
The film includes memorable characters Ricky Vaughn, Jake Taylor, Willie Mays
Hayes and Pedro Cerrano, who take part in a fictional version of the 1989
Cleveland Indians, thrown together by the team's owner, Rachel Phelps, who
wanted the worst team possible so she could move it to Florida. Despite the
team’s lack of talent, the players come together to win games just to spite the
owner. “Major League” is a fantastic comedy, and I still laugh out loud
whenever I watch it. Bob Uecker provides
some great laughs as Indians announcer Harry Doyle. Also starring in the movie
are Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Corbin Bernsen, Dennis Haysbert and Wesley
Snipes.
