Last week
legendary play-by-play announcer Pat Summerall died. Best known most recently
for sitting alongside John Madden on CBS and Fox, he also played for the
Chicago Cardinals and New York Giants in the 1950s as a kicker. We have his
2010 book, “Giants: What I Learned About Life From Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry”. As a broadcaster he worked more than ten
Super Bowls including January 26, 1997, Super Bowl XXXI. That memorable game was when the Green Bay
Packers won and returned the Vince Lombardi Trophy to its namesake’s home after
a 29-year wait, with a 35-21 win over the New England Patriots. We have that game on DVD and Summerall’s
Super Bowl broadcast of February 3, 2002. That game ended with Summerall saying, “It’s
right down the pipe, no time on the clock, and the Patriots have won Super Bowl
XXXVI. Unbelievable”.
