Harry S. Truman- 125th Birthday

May 8th is also the 125th birth anniversary of President Harry S. Truman, who was the 33rd president upon the death of Franklin Roosevelt, April 12, 1945. Truman was born at Lamar, MO and was the last of nine US presidents who did not attend college. The white house he was born in is still standing. He was born in the downstairs, southwest bedroom of the house. This room measures only 6 feet 6 inches by 10 feet 9 inches. The frame house is 20 by 28 feet, has six rooms, four downstairs and two upstairs. He was affectionately nicknamed “Give’em Hell Harry” by admirers. Truman died in 1972.

You can plan your Truman trip to Missouri with Gary Ferris’ book “Presidential Places” or Brian Lamb’s “Who’s buried in Grant’s Tomb, a tour of presidential gravesites”.
