Baseball
has always been more than just a game. A part of the fabric of American culture
and tradition rich in legends, folklore and history, baseball is a never-ending
story where every game is a new nine-inning chapter of superstar players that
stand out above the rest. They are the ones that bring the fans out to the
ballpark and baseball is the game that brings them all together. Major League
Baseball’s 2014 All-Star Game will be held on Tuesday, July 15th in
Minneapolis, Minnesota. The 85th game will be the first time the
Midsummer Classic has taken place at Target Field. It’s the Twins’ sixth
ballpark since their start as the Washington Senators. Their first stadium in
Minnesota is now the site of Mall of America. We have the book “The Twins at
the Met” by Bob Showers, which is packed with fond recollections and candid
comments from those who were there. Also in our collection is “Target Field:
The New Home of the Minnesota Twins.” This 2010 book by Steve Berg explores
with first-hand insight the long journey to getting a new ballpark. Do you
remember it was twelve years ago that the All Star game was held in Milwaukee’s
beautiful Miller Park? The Brewers were represented by Richie Sexson and Jose
Hernandez. The game controversially ended in a 7-7 tie when both teams ran out
of players.
