Visiting
the library while growing up, I remember seeing books in the children’s area
with silver and gold Newbery and Caldecott Medals on them. I knew those books
were extra special, awarded by the American Library Association as being the
best of the best in written (Newbery) and illustrated (Caldecott) children’s
books. In January, the 2014 book winners were released. “Flora & Ulysses”
by Kate DiCamillo, won the Newbery medal. The Caldecott Award for the artist of
the most distinguished American picture book for children went to “Locomotive”
by Brian Floca. The Theodor Seuss Geisel award-winning book is “Watermelon
Seed” by Greg Pizzoli. Each of the award winning books is available at the
library as well as many of the past winners.
