It was
twenty-five years ago on November 14, 1988, that ‘Murphy Brown” first aired. An
intelligent, often prickly sitcom set in Washington D.C., it starred Candice
Bergen as an egotistical, seasoned journalist working for the fictitious TV
show “FYI”. Characters on the show
included Miles Silverberg (high strung producer), Corky Sherwood (Former Miss
America turned anchor), Frank Fontana (reporter), Jim Dial (uptight anchorman),
Phil (owner of local watering hole) and Eldin (housepainter). The program was
well known for "torn-from-the-headlines" stories and blatant
political satire. It achieved a high level of political notoriety in the 1992
presidential election when Dan Quayle mentioned the show in a campaign speech.
We have the complete first season of this show, of which even today an impact
is felt.
