Legend has it that in the 1920s New England college students tossed pie tins from the Frisbie Baking Company of Bridgeport, CT. The first plastic flying disc was released by the Wham-O Company on this date as the Pluto Platter, for its resemblance to a UFO. In 1958 it was renamed the Frisbee. More than 100 million Frisbees have been sold, and there are numerous Frisbee tournaments across America every year.
