Virginia Hamilton- known for books on the African-American experience was born 75 yrs ago on March 12, 1936. She won both the National Book Award and the Newbery Medal for the 1975's "M.C. Higgins the Great" which was the first children's author ever to receive the MacArthur Foundation's genius grant. She is best remembered for her titles "The People Could Fly, Zeely, Many Thousand Gone and Her Stories." She died in 2002.
