Changes at the library

The last few weeks the library has been changing for the better as we are getting some more efficient and cost saving upgrades.

Do you realize that as new as our building still seems it was under construction 13 years ago? Since that time many of the light fixtures have become obsolete, very inefficient and costly to maintain. Now thanks to a grant from the WPPI and the Reedsburg Utility we are getting an entire lighting upgrade this month. We are moving to more efficient fixtures and bulbs that cost less to maintain and use. This installation of the new lights should be completed by Thanksgiving. So in the meantime as the installers move from area to area to get the light fixtures all changed we ask for your patience and understanding. If you are unable to see to read titles or call numbers or get into an area that may be under construction, just ask us and we will be glad to help you.

We have also upgrading our phone system. Maybe you have noticed that the night message and our voice mail system haven’t been working. Our new phone system has been installed and we are setting up the different features as we go. So as we get used to new phones and how they work we again ask for your patience. Our new system uses VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) technology, which is phone service over the Internet rather than traditional phone lines. We apologize for any interruption in service during the switch to this new system. Our night message system will be back soon, just remember our hours are: Monday-Thursday 8:30AM-8PM, Friday 8:30AM-5PM, Saturday 9AM-4PM, Sunday Noon-3 PM.

Also the computer lab area of the library has had some hardware and software upgrades. The Madison College (MATC) computer lab that is located here at the library installed new computers, and we have added some upgraded programs. (12 computers) Also during this time we are working on some of our computers to have the same features. So you may find some computers missing as they are being upgraded, but we still have 18 computers available as well as laptops to use at the library.

One of the biggest changes here will happen in January, 2011 as the South Central Library System’s LINKcat online catalog will be migrating from our current Dynix system to the new Koha system. It will still be called LINKcat but the program behind it will be different. It will function more like just using the Internet with lots of new features. You will be hearing more about this in the next few weeks as we get more training on it.

Two of the most clichéd quotes about change are “Change is good” and “Change is hard”. For the next few weeks library users and staff of the library are experiencing firsthand that “Change is hard”. It will take some time, so we ask for your patience. As Winston Churchill said, “there is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction”. While it may take a few days for all of us to see our way clearly, I hope that in the very near future you will see that by making these changes, the library has headed in the right direction. We apologize for any inconvenience.
