Jan 3- 50th Anniversary of Statehood (Alaska)

This month the state of Alaska is celebrating their fifthy anniversary. Did you know it was not always a part of the United States. It was first settled about 15,000 years ago by an Asiatic group who crossed the Bering Land Bridge. In 1867 US Secretary of State William Seward purchased Alaska for 7.2 million dollars or about two cents per acre. Believed that Seward made a blunder and it was dubbed as Seward’s Folly. There are many great books set in Alaska. Among them is Jack London’s “Call of the Wild”, the story of a suburban dog’s fight for survival in the Alaskan Klondike. You can cruise or visit via rails this winter across Alaska on DVD.
