American poet and story writer, called "America's most famous man of letters". Born at Boston, MA, he was orphaned in dire poverty in 1811 and was raised by Virginia merchant John Allan. A magazine editor of note, he is best remembered for his poetry (the Raven) and for his tales of suspense. He died in Maryland Oct 7, 1849.
