Earle H. Hagen, who composed and whistled the memorable theme for "The Andy Griffith Show," has died. He was 88. His wife says Hagen died Monday night at his home in Rancho Mirage. During a 60-year musical career, Hagen performed with the top bands of the swing era, composed for movies and television and wrote a definitive textbook on movie composing. He also co-wrote the jazz standard "Harlem Nocturne." Hagen composed themes and music for about 3,000 hours of TV during his career -- sometimes working on five shows simultaneously. He won an Emmy for his work on "I Spy." He also wrote the themes for "That Girl," "The Mod Squad" and "Make Room for Daddy," among many others.
